So I have DM'ed from 3rd edition onwards (only a little 4E) but throughout all that time I just created my own worlds and have never really played anything in a official setting. I would love do a forgotten realms campaign but I don't know reading materials are still relevant. Anything you all can recommend for somebody wanting to get a better understanding of the realms while DMing his first 5E campaign?Edit: Looks like Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide is where I should start, thanks everyone. You can use the setting books from 3.5 or 2e for detailed lore and then use SCAG and maybe The Sundering novels to fill in the gaps of what changed in 5E. The official Campaigns for 5E also contain setting info as it pertains to the adventures. These are resources recommended in Adventurers League Players guide:Forgotten Realms Information. Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting (third editionPDF).
A good general resource for information on theForgotten Realms, set about one hundred years beforethe current timeline. Grand History of the Realms (PDF).
An edition-inde-pendent look at the history of the Forgotten Realms, from its very beginnings to the Spellplague. Forgotten Realms Campaign Guide (fourth editionsupplement). A good guide to the Forgotten Realmsafter the events of the Spellplague and before theSundering (about 5–10 years before the start of thecurrent timeline).Sword Coast Information.
The Savage Frontier (first edition PDF). This bookcontains information on the areas north of Waterdeep, set before the Time of Troubles. Waterdeep and the North (first edition PDF). A guideto all things in the City of Splendors, before the Timeof Troubles. Volo’s Guide to the Sword Coast (second edition PDF).A fun, colorful travel guide to the southern portion ofthe Sword Coast, with details on inns, taverns, andother establishments an adventurer might encounter.
City of Splendors: Waterdeep (third edition v.3.5PDF). An updated supplement on Waterdeep, setabout one hundred years before the current timeline. Neverwinter Campaign Setting (fourth editionsupplement). An excellent resource on the city ofNeverwinter and the surrounding area, set just beforethe Sundering.Moonsea Information.
The Moonsea (second edition PDF). A good resourceon the civilized and uncivilized areas around theMoonsea, set after the Time of Troubles, over one hun-dred years before the current timeline. Mysteries of the Moonsea (third edition v.3.5 PDF).An updated resource of the Moonsea region for 3rdEdition, with adventure sites. With something so vast as the Realms, there are all sorts of starting points. My favorite top-level book so far is Ed Greenwood Presents Elminster's Forgotten Realms, a system-neutral, edition-neutral book. It covers sociological aspects of the realms - education, literacy, festivals - as well the facts and figures of geography, history, and the like.If you plan to game in 5 th Edition, the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide sacrifices some cultural cues for more plot hooks and details on specific sites along the Sword Coast, as well as some class options, new backgrounds, and other 5E-specific material.
If you know you're going to play 5E and only buy one book, I'd probably choose this one, as it'll give you more stuff directly relevant to your game.If you're planning a 4 th Edition campaign-and even if you're not-the Neverwinter Campaign Setting lays out a variety of scheming factions and foes, dangerous environments, and just tons of plot hooks. There are also quite a few stat blocks all ready for your use. It's a model example of how to lay out a campaign guide, too. It is set during the Spellplague, so you'll have to tweak some of the elements if you plan to set it during a time when Neverwinter isn't quite as apocalyptic.
